The belted sandfish, Serranus subligarius, is a wonderful species of basslet well suited for smaller aquariums. Slight caution must be taken with this fish as it will consume tiny shrimp and fish, otherwise they are quite peaceful and beginner friendly. This fish reaches a maximum size of 3-4 inches and does great in aquariums 20 gallons or larger.
